Making the Best Choices in your Fruits and Vegetables
It makes sense that choosing to only eat organic can be a challenge for people, especially when it comes to costs. Making the choice to eat fruits and vegetables on a daily basis means making the best choices that you can in order to decrease the stress in your body and on your pocketbook.
It’s easy to do your own homework as to what the payoff can be in eating organic fruits and vegetables. Having pesticides in our system can affect so many aspects of our functioning, including neurological and hormonal functioning.
Here is a way to make better choices. I am providing two lists – one will be of fruits and vegetables that have the highest pesticide loads in testing, so would be worthwhile only buying organic, or not eating at all. The second list will be of fruits and vegetables that tend to have a lower pesticide load, so can consider buying non-organic. Remember that we live in a seasonal climate, so buying fruits and vegetables that are in season can work out well in most budgets.
The Dirty Dozen (Highest Pesticide Loads so recommended to only choose organic):
- Apples
- Celery
- Cherry Tomatoes
- Cucumbers
- Grapes
- Hot Peppers
- Nectarines
- Peaches
- Potatoes
- Spinach
- Strawberries
- Sweet Bell Peppers
Strongly suggested to choose Organic (may have highly toxic pesticide loads): Collard Greens, Kale, Summer Squash
The Clean Fifteen (Lowest Pesticide Loads so can consider choosing non-organic):
- Asparagus
- Avocado
- Cabbage
- Cantaloupe (domestic)
- Eggplant
- Grapefruit
- Kiwi
- Mangoes
- Mushrooms
- Onions
- Papayas
- Pineapples
- Sweet corn
- Sweet peas
- Sweet potatoes
